The .cat TLD was delegated in 2005 to the non profit Fundació .cat, after a successful bid by a grassroots campaign that galvanized the catalan speaking civil society. Early adoption by Public Administrations and local businessess gave the TLD a huge visibility boost in the catalan speaking areas, where it is now an established presence with a leading role in digital capacitation and outreach projects. Its impact on the new round of TLDs was visible in many different cultural and linguistic initiatives, that were shaped following the model established by .cat in 2004.
